Hosea 12:6So now, come back to your God. Act with love and justice, and always depend on him.
Hosea is a very interesting book in the bible. If you don’t know the story Hosea is a prophet and he was called to marry a prostitute as a symbol to God’s people. His life showed that God is in a blood and love covenant with Israel, just like a marriage. But the people broke that covenant with God by “getting into bed” with sin. Or in Hosea’s case, his wife was actually sleeping around while they were married. The children that Hosea’s wife had where symbolic of what sin leads to.
The story goes on with Hosea always loving his wife. He continually let her back into his life. She would go out and have sex for money and he would take her back. He would tell her she needs to stop, but when it happened again he still took her back.
Hosea then turns to Israel and says they are sinning, just like his unfaithful wife.
Hosea 4:1-2Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel! The LORD has brought charges against you, saying:“There is no faithfulness, no kindness,no knowledge of God in your land. You make vows and break them;you kill and steal and commit adultery. There is violence everywhere—one murder after another.Hosea 4:4Don’t point your finger at someone elseand try to pass the blame! My complaint, you priests,is with you.Hosea 4:6My people are being destroyedbecause they don’t know me.Since you priests refuse to know me,I refuse to recognize you as my priests.Since you have forgotten the laws of your God,I will forget to bless your children.
The message of Hosea sounds much like America today. In our history, many looked to God for help and guidance. Now the atmosphere is very different. People are out for themselves. This country is being destroyed by debt and anger.
God is a god of justice. Things have to be just, the “scales of justice” must be level. When laws are broken payment has to be made for that crime. So when it says “Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget to bless your children.” That seems to be happening here also. The blessings of the Lord are much less on America then they once where.
That isn’t where it ends though, There is hope!
The book ends in chapter 14 with God calling the people back.
1-4Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God,for your sins have brought you down.Bring your confessions, and return to the LORD.Say to him,“Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us,so that we may offer you our praises.Assyria cannot save us,nor can our warhorses.Never again will we say to the idols we have made,‘You are our gods.’No, in you alonedo the orphans find mercy.”The LORD says,“Then I will heal you of your faithlessness;my love will know no bounds, for my anger will be gone forever.
God is an unfailing God. His love never ends. He wants to bless you and our land, but we must first turn from sin and fully trust in Him to be are God and protector.
Just like Hosea always took his wife back God will always take us back into His loving care. But we need to be willing to ask if we can come back.
