Jesus Wept

Has anything bad ever happened in your life?

Have you had a bad day at work? Gotten fired? Been yelled at? has your car ever broken down? Have you ever had a bad day(night) at home? Parents getting on you over something? Girlfriend/boyfriend creating on you? Kids driving you crazy? You and your spouse have a big fight?

Someone Close to you Die?

And the list goes on and on…

If you are a human you can say that at least one of these has happened to you…and if you WOW you must be the coolest person EVER!

We all go through things in life that are just to much for us to handle. Different people react differently to each situation. But one thing is the same those terrible things in life will always keep popping up. The bible says in John 16:33

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

If I can translate a little, Jesus said This world is going to SUCK! There will be hardships and sad things throughout your life, no matter who you are, but cheer up! I have been there and I have made a way for HOPE for you.

What I love about John 11:35 is that it shows Jesus’ human side. The smallest verse in the bible (the one we weren’t allowed to quote for a piece of candy in Sunday School) shows that Jesus didn’t live on a bed of flowers and rainbows. Jesus Wept!

What did He weep for?

I have read Theologians who write that He wept for man kind! Or saying that verse shows Jesus weeping for our sins. Things of that nature. And that may be true. The idea that it was a symbol of He loves us so much He cries for us when we don’t choose Him.

But is that why He WAS weeping? No!

Jesus wept for His friend Lazarus who had just died. Jesus was fully God and fully man. He lost someone He loved. Loosing a close friend of family member is very hard.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance

There are times in life where it will just knock us down and THAT IS OK. It is ok to cry and mourn. It is ok to feel sad for loss and be upset over things.

But Jesus didn’t stay in that sad state of defeat and hopelessness. The story of Lazarus didn’t end there.

Side Note…there are things in this life that hit us so hard we don’t know what to do. Sometimes it feels easier to just give up. Just let that part of us die. Living in weeping and mourning is NOT a better life! Ecclesiastes says A TIME to WEEP A TIME to MOURN. But don’t make it a life style.

Anyway…back to Lazarus and Jesus

John 11:38-44 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Jesus was deeply moved. I think that was an understatement. In the natural Jesus wept for His friend. We often weep because things feel so hopeless. But by the Spirit of God Jesus was able to move past the natural hopelessness and bring His friend back to life.

By the Holy Spirit we can bring back to life those things that died. Those broken marriages, those failed dreams, those dead relationships with friends, family, or children. When we choose to stop crying and start moving in the POWER that comes from the Spirit of God we can work on restoring those things.

Will you choose to take Christ’s example and not let emotions run your life?

Smith Wigglesworth said,  “I never ask myself how i feel. I tell myself how I feel.”

Give way for the Holy Spirit to move through your life and choose to have the joy of the Lord.

God Bless!
