The crash


Throughout much of the United States there have been very cold temperatures. This morning it warmed up and began to rain where I live. Rain is not a big deal most of the time, but after the past few days the rain is freezing as soon as it hits the ground. Because I have always lived in areas of the country with snow and ice I feel very comfortable driving in these winter conditions. However, while driving to work I attempted to stop at a light, but instead of stopping I started sliding toward another car. My heart dropped. Thankfully I stopped before hitting the other car.

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

Paul describes life as a race marked out for us. Just like a race a road is marked out for us to follow. God has created a road of life that He wants us to follow. On that road there will be upset and downs, twits and turns. But we can trust it will get us to where God wants us to be.

After many years of following the road as a Christian we can become comfortable with the drive.

Paul writes – Philippians 4:11-13

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

In all circumstances on the road of life we need to learn to be content, but not prideful. It’s is easy to slip into pride when we have felt as though we have been there done that. But just like that slippery road there are outside things that we can’t deal with on our own. That is why Paul concluded the section with…

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Without the help that come from the Holy Spirit we are not able to avoid the crash that comes from pride.

After I slide on the ice and my heart dropped, I was humbled in knowing that I have been given some control over life. But we must not try to take control away from God. When we fall into pride and take the control away from God we will crash or live in destruction.
