When it comes to the origin of all things there is a great debate over whether God created all things or whether the evolution is where all things came from.
The process is important in our faith in God or mankind. If you believe God designed and created the world then you will believe God is the creator and king of all creation; however if your believe the evolutionary process was how all things came to be you will believe people (you and I) are the king of all things.
We see the world through the eyes of matter and time. This means there must have been a beginning at some point. These two worldviews view the origin of all things in two ways. Either God existed before matter and time or there was nothing before matter and time and we (the kings) haven’t yet figured it out.
Richard Dawkins (a well known evolutionist) was on television and the question came to him about how to get something from nothing; meaning how is it possible for there to be nothing then the evolutionary process started. He responds by saying,
“of course it’s counterintuitive that you can get something from nothing of course common sense doesn’t allow you to get something from nothing that’s why its interesting it’s got to be interesting in order to give rise to the universe at all. Something pretty mysterious had to give rise to the origin of the universe…Something can come from nothing.”
This is, as Dawkins remarks, an interesting topic. Nothing is a word that means according to the Webster Dictionary
Not any thing : no thing No part Not at all In no degree Something that does not exist
Thomas Aquinas believed it is was impossible to get something from nothing.
There must have been a time when no physical things existed, but something can’t come from nothing.
If it is impossible for nothing to produce something then we must find what is beyond the nothing.
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37
In this context the angel told Mary she would have the Messiah Jesus as a virgin. This is a physical impossibility, but it connects back to the interesting question of nothing.
The question of something coming from nothing is what God was about to do in this young woman’s life through this baby. Jesus was conceived in her out of nothing. Thomas Aquinas concluded that something can’t come from nothing; unless God is beyond the nothing. This is what we see happening to Mary.
Mary didn’t understand how or why the angel was telling her this, but she responds with acceptance by faith.
For we live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
In understanding the origin of all things it takes faith.
Evolution and Creation Require Faith
Faith is an essential part of believing in how something can come from nothing. The issue is the fundamental differences between creation and evolution. Either a willingness/desire to give God the possibility or not.
If evolution explains the origin as Mr. Dawkins explained then it is
Something pretty mysterious had to give rise to the origin of the universe…Something can come from nothing.”
But if creation explains the origin as Mr. Aquinas explained then it is seen through Scripture…
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:3
Nothing can’t create anything, but God who is beyond the nothing can create what is see out of nothing.
Both must have faith to stand on the ideas, but creation by God who is beyond time and matter gives us a lot more understanding in seeing the world now. Something can’t come from nothing and no matter how you attempt to explain nothing it will never generate something.
Understanding creation helps us understand God. He is not part of the visible universe, but He is beyond or outside of that. This is why we can have faith in Him. He is so powerful that at His command something came from nothing.
This is true for the creation of the universe and the birth of Jesus though Mary.
If we attempt to place God into the limitations of the physical and timed universe He would not have been able to create all things. He would have been created with the start of time and space, but He is beyond the nothing and the something of the universe.
Faith in the Creator helps us to know there is more than the nothing we are currently facing.
In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. Genesis 1:1
2. Creation Gives Hope in the Nothing
When looking at the first verse of the Bible it is clear that in the beginning, before time, before space, before matter, before good, before evil, before all things there was God.
It is a glorious hope knowing that even when there was nothing God was. This is the same God who is is today!
Before our joy, love, peace, truth, sadness, pain, suffering, God was…and IS!
This means creation was an act of greatest love. Through that love He commanded the nothing to bring forth the something we see today. In the beginning of all things He was. He was not created with the universe He simply was. He does not have a beginning or an end; He is the Alpha and Omega (the first and the last).
15 The Son (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. Colossians 1:15-18
“He is before all things.” God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit were before all things.
Jesus is the key to all of creation. He was there and through Him all things were made and through Him all things hold together. Jesus Christ was an important part of the creation before the something and He is still the key to the creation. He is the image of the invisible God and it is through Him we are able to have the something we call life. He gives us the ability to not become nothing and He made a way to enteral life. This couldn’t have happened if He was not the key to the origin of all things and the key to life now. “He is the beginning…so that in everything He might have the supremacy.” Jesus has the supremacy over all things created seen and unseen. This allowed Him to pay the price for sin and death.
Faith in the idea of creation and the creator gives us the ability to have hope through the hardships or the nothing of life. In life we will struggle with the nothingness in all areas, but God the Creator is beyond our nothing!
What is the nothing you are experiencing today?
Self-worth, Finances, Hope, Health, Joy, love, Friendship, Peace, Family, Unbelief, Strength and the list goes on…
In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:6 ASV
Whatever the Nothing is in your life know that God is beyond it! “NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD!”
Do not be anxious, worry, or fear the nothing in life because God was able to make something out of nothing at the beginning, then He sent Christ Jesus to earth out of nothing to make something out of our nothing. When you see your life and there is a lack or a nothingness you are facing know that Jesus Christ was before the beginning and He still is beyond our nothing. He has supremacy over all things “seen and unseen.”
Have faith and hope knowing that He will create something out of your nothing if you will as Paul wrote…
“in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
When you have nothing left let the One who created all things and who is not subject to those things be your everything!
